Sparkler Exits: How We Really Feel

We know sparkler exits are all the rage these days and we’ll admit that they might make for great photos. With that being said, truthfully, we are over them.

Here’s why:

  1. Logistics

There are a lot of logistics that go into executing the perfect sparkler exit. Since we recommend doing a mock exit when most of your guests are still at the reception, finding the perfect time for the exit is difficult. There are already several formalities that guests experience and once we get the party started, it is difficult to stop it for the exit. Gathering everyone for the exit is difficult as guests start to spread out once the dancing begins. Creating this pause in the reception can interfere with the vibe your DJ has worked so hard to build for you and your guests.

  2. Safety

Safety is always a top priority. Giving giant sticks of fire to guests once the drinks start flowing does not fall under the category of the safest idea. And we are sure other planners and wedding experts can agree, there have been a few close calls with fire. Catching your planner or another guest on fire ruins the evening!

  3. Venue Restrictions

Many venues require that flames are contained. Sparklers are anything but contained! It is important that the venue allows a sparkler exit, as we do not want to violate any contracts. Either finding a venue who allows this or getting it approved is important and sometimes can be difficult. There are other exits that are more simplistic to execute and do not bring into question the guidelines of your contract.

If you must do a sparkler exit, we'll do everything in our power to make it picture-perfect! Here are our recommendations:

  1. Tell your photographer (and planner) ahead of time and make sure that this is built into the timeline for the day.

  2. Get the 36” sparklers and light them from the bottom. They will burn for a while before everyone’s it lit and everyone is ready. This way in the photos the sparks are at the top of the sparkler.

  3. Make sure you have a strong lighter. Regular lighters do not work the best and are not quick enough to get everyone’s sparkler lit.
